The median age distribution in Melbourne shows that the outer suburbs and more rural areas, such as the Mornington Peninsula, generally have an older population.
Geographically, inner Melbourne generally has a younger median age. Suburbs in the east and south east have an older median age.
The Bellarine Peninsula on the south western side of Port Phillip Bay also has a particularly older median age.
The generally older population of rural areas shows that youth has a tendency of moving into the large city and conversely, older people move to more rural areas for a slower-paced lifestyle.
Median age data used to create this map was obtained from the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ 2011 Census.
