The median age distribution in Brisbane shows that the inner city area has a relatively younger population, while the outer and more rural suburbs generally have an older population.
A trend also evident in Brisbane’s age distribution map is that residents of Brisbane’s islands, such as North Stradbroke Island or Coochiemudlo Island also have an older median age. This can be attributed to the fact that retirees often seek out a more relaxed, slow-paced lifestyle, which the islands would provide. Travel onto the mainland would also be cumbersome from the islands, requiring ferry travel, making it a disincentive for working-age residents to reside on the islands.
Just visible on the northern edge of the map, the southern edge of the Sunshine Coast also shows that it has a relatively older population.
Median age data used to create this map was obtained from the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ 2011 Census.
